Promoting Sustained and Continuous Growth through Critical Thinking
While some learners are naturally metacognitive in their thinking, we cannot assume that everyone will take their professional learning to metacognition.
At inFOCUS, we believe that it’s important to plan experiences that engage learners in critical thinking, shifting the focus of professional development to the process of professional growth.
When planning both short-term and long-term professional development, we begin by asking these critical questions:
- What do I want participants to learn?
- What are the purposes of this learning?
- How will I model for my learners?
- How will I know they understand?
Then, to engage professionals in this type of reflection about their practice, we act as learning coaches who plan purposeful questions that focus on what we want participants to learn. We support professionals one-on-one and in small collaborative teams, using questions to focus all conversations on critical thinking about practice.
